It’s also one of the favorite sports for the Special Olympics Unified Sports initiative, when players with and without intellectual disabilities form teams to play other unified teams. It’s a learning experience that’s also a lot of fun.

I have several years of volunteering and assisting with basketball have prepared me to move our team forward for many great seasons to come. Bowling, hiking, biking, and boating are also activities I like to participate in during my free time.

I began with soccer for about four years. For the last 15 years I’ve been coaching basketball. Occasionally I assist with flag football. Our athletes playing for SOCR have become family. It’s very rewarding to see every athlete give 100% to be their best. It’s also humbling to see the sportsmanship towards every opponent no matter what the score.

I have been around the extra special (we are all special, but I feel ones with disabilities are extra special) community for all my life as I am the sister of a past SO Spring Games participant, cousin to a current participant, friends with a number of athletes older, same age and younger and the proud mom of a current SO athlete! I feel my life purpose is to help people and am overjoyed to be a volunteer and coach for SO!!!! In the little free time, I get I enjoy to be with my family and friends, play games, watch movies and LOVE when I get to play basketball with my kids and  go bowling with them or friends!!!

I started getting involved with Special Olympics when I met my husband over 20 years ago when he was volunteering. I was amazed by all of the positivity and love that everyone had. Fast forward and we now have a son who has special abilities and wanted to be more involved so we signed him up for sports in 2020. I was just a parent watching and taking it all in and now I’m a coach and loving every minute. You can have the worst day ever and the athletes put the biggest smile on your face and make it all better!
